Employer charged for harboring cop-killing illegal
Allegedly helped alien return to U.S. after man was deported for previous crime

A Texas employer is facing federal charges for allegedly helping an illegal immigrant return to the United States after he was deported, an illegal who now is accused in the fatal shooting of a police officer, according to a published report.

Juan Leonardo Quintero-Perez is accused of shooting and killing Houston policeman Rodney Johnson and jury selection in the capital murder trial is scheduled March 31. He could be sentenced to death if convicted, according to a report by the Associated Press.

"Every single time an illegal alien is arrested for a crime, police should be asking who their employer is and then also providing that information directly to ICE and ICE needs to take action," said "MyAmerica," on a forum run by Americans for Legal Immigration PAC.

"I'm so happy that this happened in this case. There are hundreds of thousands more just like it…"

The illegal alien allegedly shot Johnson repeatedly in the head as the policeman sat in his patrol car during a September 2006 traffic stop. Quintero-Perez allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband as he sat, in handcuffs, in the back seat of the patrolman's car.

Now landscape company owner Robert Lane Camp, 47, has been named in a federal complaint alleging he encouraged Quintero-Perez to return to the United States and harbored him once he was in the country.

Camp was arrested Wednesday and was scheduled to be freed on a $50,000 unsecured bond, the report said. His lawyer declined comment.

"This prosecution demonstrates the consequences a U.S. citizen faces when he or she decides to harbor or assist an undocumented alien to enter the United States and to employ that alien unlawfully," said a statement released by U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle.

"The shooting of HPD Officer Johnson was a tragic incident that could have been avoided," he said.

According to investigators, Johnson apparently missed the weapon when he handcuffed Quintero-Perez and put him in the back of the patrol car. Authorities said when Johnson stopped Quintero-Perez, the illegal alien was driving a company truck owned by Camp.

The report said the illegal alien's earlier court case involved claims of felony indecency with a child in 1998, when Camp allegedly posted a $10,000 bond and hired a defense lawyer. Quintero-Perez was deported in 1999 after his conviction.

But the criminal complaint in the new case said Camp reportedly bought a plane ticket from Phoenix to Houston for Quintero-Perez after he returned to the U.S., again illegally.

The complaint said Quintero-Perez's wife, Theresa Quintero, a U.S. citizen, reported Camp listed her, not her husband, as an employee.

"Officer Rodney Johnson's terrible murder illustrates that hiring and harboring of illegal aliens is not a victimless crime," Immigration Officer Robert Rutt told the AP.

"This is the first time I have seen this done," added jimpasz on the ALIPAC forum site, "a criminal conviction of an employer in a federal court will send a very load (sic) and clear message."
