Police officers with the Lodi Police Department are still getting in all the required gun range training they need. But they’re being advised by commanders to do less shooting on their own time because ammunition is so difficult to obtain.

“With the current ammo shortage throughout the nation, it makes it more difficult for us to get ammo. During these times, we’ve had to request our officers not go to the range as frequently as they have in the past,” said Sgt. Sierra Brucia.

Brucia wouldn’t comment on why a shortage of ammunition exists, but Outdoor Sportsman store owner Eric Johnston said there’s been a rush on ammunition since President Obama stepped up pressure for gun control legislation.

“They can’t build enough ammo. The components are hard to get: the powder, primers and lead. There’s been a real shortage,” said Johnston.
