The U.S. is set to deploy 14 additional ground-based interceptors at missile silos in Alaska and California.

The announcement comes as North Korea has been making bellicose threats to void the armistice that ended the Korean War and launch a nuclear attack on the U.S.

The extra interceptors on the West Coast, designed to counter attacks from an intercontinental ballistic missile, would bring the total number of interceptors to 44,

The U.S. and South Korea began annual military drills this week despite the North Korean threats.
