The Free Congress Foundation has
announced the organization is sponsoring an event to honor majority whip
Tom DeLay, R-TX, and Rep. Henry Hyde, R-IL, and the House managers for
"their heroic efforts" in the impeachment process.
President Paul F. Weyrich made the announcement, saying that DeLay,
Hyde and the rest of the managers will be recipients of the Foundation's
"Liberty Award" for their "efforts to try to save America."
The event is planned for Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at a location to be
announced. Weyrich, who is directing the effort, said he has already
talked to "dozens of groups" who are interested in co-sponsoring the
event.
After consulting with other organizations, Weyrich said FCF decided
to announce the event last Friday because, "We are ashamed of what the
U.S. Senate did. We want majority whip DeLay and Henry Hyde and all of
the House managers to know that even though they will be subject to a
lot of criticism and second guessing, we believe what they did was
extraordinary and will hold up well in history."
"We want an opportunity to pay tribute to (their) greatness," he
added.
"We simply cannot think of anyone more worthy of this honor," added
FCF Vice President Lisa S. Dean. "We truly admire these Members of the
House of
Representatives." Her division actually grants the awards.
"We are working to make this an event which ordinary folks who want
to pay tribute to these House members can do so."
Free Congress Foundation is a 21-year-old non-partisan public policy
think tank. Rep. Ralph Hall, D-TX, one of the five Democrats in the
House who voted for articles of impeachment against President Clinton,
serves as the foundation's chairman.
The FCF also airs a number of television programs on the
Internet
throughout the week,
such as "American Investigator," "America's Voice," "Legal Voice,"
"Endangered Liberties," and "Direct Line with Paul Weyrich."
