Columnist calls for moral leadership;

Ambassador Alan Keyes, a Republican Party leader and commentator for
WorldNetDaily, says Americans must return to moral truth if the nation’s
freedoms are to be preserved.

Keyes, who is also a nationally syndicated radio and television talk
show host, believes that a major crisis in America today is the nation’s
loss of moral character. Because of this loss, Keyes said, our freedoms
are being threatened.

Speaking before an attentive audience at the California Republican
Party Convention in Sacramento last weekend, Keyes said, “We are in the
midst of a delusion. If we wake up on time, we’ll save the country.”

Speaking of this delusion, Keyes referred to the current happenings
in the White House. Referring to Clinton as a liar and a rapist, Keyes
argued that something is morally wrong in the country since people can
just allow Clinton to remain in office and accept what he’s done. He
said the nation is forgetting its Creator.

The will of the Creator, a “fundamental truth” that demands that all
are to live by moral absolutes, unites all Americans, Keyes said. This
idea of a Creator, Keyes pointed out, is not just a Christian, Catholic,
Jewish or Muslim idea either. It’s an American idea.

“We are united by that belief (in God), or we are united by no
other,” Keyes said.

Keyes suggested that in order get the nation back on the “moral”
track, the nation must seriously look at the issues that epitomize moral
corruption. One of the most serious issues that Keyes believes needs to
be looked at is abortion.

Like others in the pro-life movement, Keyes compared abortion to
slavery. He compared the decision that America needs to make today
concerning abortion to Abraham Lincoln’s decision more than 130 years
ago when he freed the slaves. Lincoln freed the slaves at the risk of
possibly dividing the nation, and he did it because he believed that it
was the right thing to do.

Today, America’s leaders have another decision to make that is
similar to Lincoln’s decision, according to Keyes. That decision, Keyes
said, is to decide whether or not it’s worth protecting life in the womb
at the risk of again separating a nation.

Keyes also believes that it is the morally right thing to give
taxpayers back their money in the form of the surplus. The people, he
says, know best what to do with their money.

Keyes pointed out that in a free society, one has to trust the
people. Otherwise freedom can’t exist. However, Keyes also pointed out
that if the American people abandon their moral principles, freedom will
be fruitless because they won’t be able to make the right decisions
anyway. Just as Americans over 130 years ago made the right decision
with slavery, though, Keyes believes that Americans today can still make
the right decisions.

At the convention, Keyes also briefly mentioned his possible
candidacy for the presidency in 2000. He said that although he is still
undecided, the way in which the people respond to what he says will help
him to decide.

“If I run for president, I would do so because of the importance to
articulate the major crisis in America,” Keyes said. “We have reached a
depth of moral depravity unlike anything that has ever been seen.”

In deciding whether or not to run, Keyes is also considering the
effects that such a campaign would have on his wife and his three
children.

Regardless of whether or not he runs for president, though, Keyes
pleaded with those at the convention to take action in preserving the
moral truths that the country was founded on.

“You got to stand for those things that we as a country believe in,”
Keyes said. “Otherwise, you will help Bill Clinton flush this country
down the toilet of history.”
