Poor man’s ‘generator’ now available

A new compact, low-priced battery back-up power unit Statpower’s
“PowerPac”
— is set to hit the market in
time for Y2K preparation.

The “PowerPac” is a completely portable product, which recharges on
AC or DC power when it is available and then provides hours of AC or DC
power when power sources are interrupted. It’s powerful enough to start
a car and versatile enough to power a computer for many hours.

Statpower is billing this as a low-cost alternative for consumers who
have not been able to prepare for possible power outages due to Y2K or
other causes.

Statpower is making arrangements with the Red Cross to donate several
units for relief purposes where power failures have occurred. These
units would either be used in the homes of victims affected by a
disaster or distributed to Red Cross field offices or fleet vehicles to
be used as a back-up power supply by staff members.
