A California man was arrested at a police checkpoint when officers discovered 4,200 blasting caps, some gasoline and a cutting torch inside his vehicle, heightening fears of terrorism during Y2K.
Officers found the materials Thursday evening when James Pellum, 39, identified as a resident of Weldon, pulled into a police checkpoint. Pellum, who had three children in his car, was stopped in Adelanto, some 65 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Police did not speculate on Pellum's motives, nor did they offer many details surrounding the mystery of why the suspect may have had the blasting caps, three gasoline cans, two gasoline generators and an acetylene torch in his vehicle.
Pellum was charged with possession of a destructive device and child endangerment. Two of the children were turned over to Child Protective Services, the third released to family members.
The San Bernardino County sheriff's bomb squad later destroyed the blasting caps, but officials would release no further information surrounding the incident.
