Politicizing the Boy Scouts

By Jon Dougherty

My son is involved in the Boy Scouts; he has earned the rank of
Webelos, and I’m awful proud of him for that accomplishment. But if a
certain homosexual activist movement

is successful in their efforts to open up the Boy Scouts of America to
homosexuals — and especially homosexual troop leaders — I’ll
jerk my son out so fast it will be as if he were never there.

I’ll remove my son from any further association with the BSA
not because of anything they have done, but because all of this
politicizing of the organization will have ruined every reason I
permitted my son to join in the first place.

I want him to be involved in “boy” things like most fathers with sons
do, in an effort to help him develop social skills in dealing with his
peers and to help him learn the manly concepts like morale, teamwork,
and — yes — “unit cohesion.” I want him to be exposed to groups and
organizations that complement the “manly” things I am teaching him —
self-reliance, self-sufficiency, outdoor skills, and character building.
I want him to learn the difference between right and wrong, truth and
lies. I want him to know how to take care of himself and his
family when he gets older because his family will be depending on him to
know those things.

Most importantly, in everything my kids do, I wanted them to be
involved with people and organizations that openly, brazenly and
unabashedly profess allegiance to and faith in God Almighty.

Those of you ready to label me an intolerant, homophobic right-wing
wacko can line up to do so now,
if you choose. But I’m warning
you: It’ll roll off of me like water on a duck’s rear-end. And anyway,
I’ll have more about so-called intolerance in tomorrow’s column.

I’m so against this gay inclusion into the Boy Scouts because by
allowing homosexuals and atheists — let alone girls — into the
organization, then one of the bedrock tenets of its foundation will be
gone. There will be no reason to remain a member in good standing
because to me, the BSA will no longer be in good standing with the Lord,
our Master and Creator.

Why? Because the Lord God Almighty does not abide homosexuality,
despite all of the outraged ranting to the contrary spewed by the
lunatic left. Pick up a Bible and see for yourself, if you dare to know
the truth.

Besides, does anyone care that the BSA rightfully is uninterested in
promoting “sex” in general — homosexual or otherwise? That’s not what
the organization was designed to do, and since homosexuality is indeed
little more than an issue of same-gender sex, that aspect is as
foreign to the group as any other sex-related topic. It just does not
fit in the game plan.

Not only that, but the last thing any responsible parent should want
for their teenaged and pre-teen children is an introduction to
any form of sex; secular society will introduce them to that soon
enough, sad to say.

Furthermore, the BSA is not now, nor has it ever been, an
organization for gays, anymore than the National Gay Lobby was
established for heterosexuals who find the lifestyle revolting. More
than that, however, there is a definite difference in motive; the
BSA exists to help young males develop into principled adults. The
latter was established for purely selfish political reasons and cannot
compare to the fine work the BSA has accomplished over the years.

But no matter — the point is the BSA, like the NGL, has every right
to make its own rules and abide by its own conscience without being
subjected to politically motivated assaults on its character.

That is an important concept to grasp, because nobody is saying gays
cannot — or should not — form their own homosexual boy scout-like
troops, if that’s what they want to do. They have formed other kinds of
“heterophobic” (meaning no heteros allowed) organizations, so why they
cannot be convinced to do the same here is anybody’s guess.

But maybe there is more to this issue than meets the eye.

Perhaps all of this homosexual activism within the BSA is nothing
more than another cry for legitimacy. As gays run around the country
and in the courtrooms crying “foul,” they are failing miserably in their
attempt to mask a movement focused solely on forced acceptance
most people find offensive. It’s a losing proposition, regardless of
how many times gay activists “win” in court or in Congress. In fact,
Christians have never achieved universal acceptance either, so if anyone
can teach homosexual lobbyists the “rules of the acceptance game,” it is
they.

The BSA has every right to be upset about this unprovoked attack upon
their foundational principles. Their rules are supposed to be up to
them — the same as any other group.

You don’t have to like them, but you do have to respect them if you
want them to respect yours; the “acceptance” pendulum swings both ways.
Politicizing, then destroying a respectable and accomplished
organization like the Boy Scouts may win you temporary favor with a
judge, but most of the country will not share the court’s “enthusiasm”
or, in this case, point of view. That’s just a fact of life.
