The New York Daily News recently quoted former president Gerald Ford
as advising Republican presidential nominee G.W. Bush to "pick a running
mate who favors abortion rights." According to the News, Ford said,
"There's no question about it, a pro-choice running mate would help Gov.
Bush and help the party. I feel very strongly that way. A responsible
pro-choice candidate will really strengthen the ticket." Ford proves
that stupidity is not the exclusive property of Democrats.
If Bush wants to sabotage his own election campaign, picking a
pro-abortion vice president is the way to do it. A recent Associated
Press poll of delegates to the Republican National Convention reveals
that at least 51 percent of them will either oppose or not commit to the
Republican ticket if Bush picks a pro-abortion running mate. Such a
scenario would doom any chance of a Republican victory in November.

Ford disagrees, of course. "Where are they (pro-life Republicans)
gonna go? If the choice is Gore or Bush, they won't stay home. It's not
a major problem," Ford is quoted as saying.
I beg to differ. It is a major problem! Abortion is America's
national holocaust. Nearly 40 million innocent unborn babies have been
legally butchered in this country since that infamous Roe v Wade Supreme
Court decision in 1973. (A court dominated by Republican-appointed
justices, by the way.) America has now murdered nearly double the people
killed by Hitler's Third Reich. In a few more years, we will eclipse
Stalin's bloodletting in the former Soviet Union.

Furthermore, Ford's "no problem" mentality reveals the greater
problem. People like Gerald Ford have forgotten (or never learned) the
fundamental principles of our nation's existence. Our Declaration of
Independence categorically states, "We hold these truths to be
self-evident, that all
men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with
certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are
instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the
governed."

Our Creator has endowed us with the right to life. Government's just
authority is only recognized as it secures and protects this right. Only
a corrupt and illegitimate government sanctions the killing of its most
helpless and innocent citizens!
Abortion is not a political issue. It represents the most fundamental
principle of our national conscience. Are we cognizant of our moral
responsibility to God, or not? Do we recognize our Creator's authority
over our lives, or not? Are we children of God or creatures of the
state? Does our soul belong to God or to government? The legalization of
abortion-on-demand reveals that America no longer recognizes the
"self-evident" truths articulated in the Declaration. It would appear
that neither does Gerald Ford.
Contrary to Ford's pixilated perspective, millions of pro-life
Republicans will not support a ticket that includes a pro-abortion vice
president. (Many of us are not even convinced that Bush is a committed
pro-lifer.) Any politician who cannot be trusted on such a fundamental
issue as this proves that he or she cannot be trusted with our support.
Never should we be willing to sacrifice our conscience on the altar of
political partisanship.
