For the third time in as many years, Attorney General Janet Reno has
refused to appoint a special counsel to examine the voluminous evidence
against Vice President Al Gore relating to his fundraising role in the
1996 Clinton-Gore reelection campaign.
This time, career Justice Department lawyer Robert Conrad was told
no, there's no evidence or reason to investigate Gore, his current bid
to succeed Clinton the Corrupt in the White House notwithstanding.

And if you believe that one. ...
Reno is, has been, and continues to be one of the biggest
embarrassments this country has ever suffered in the behavior of a
public official. Her stonewalling is as obvious as the evidence against
those she protects.

But I wonder -- what did Conrad expect? Other senior Justice
Department officials -- including FBI Director Louis Freeh -- have
recommended that Gore be investigated. They, too, were -- predictably --
refused.
It's amazing to me that the Justice Department is filled with so many
stupid prosecutors; if you believe Reno, her prosecutors must be
stupid because she has not found one good reason (or, apparently, enough
good evidence) to warrant an investigation of Gore, despite their
recommendations.

So Americans are left to conclude one of two things: Either Justice
is filled with incompetents or Reno is purposefully blocking
investigations.
I'll let you be the judge.
Conrad, Freeh and the others have all found enough evidence to
implicate that Gore is guilty as hell of violating campaign
finance laws, and that he did so with malice, intent, and calculated
action. Nobody -- and I mean nobody -- in Washington believes
Gore's "no controlling legal authority" BS. For Reno to pretend she
does is a joke.
Furthermore, I guess it means nothing to congressional panels,
lawmakers and Reno herself that most people associated with Clinton and
Gore -- that illegally raised the funds for the 1996 campaign on their
behalf -- have been busted and jailed. We have one such person who works
for us at this Web paper -- Johnny Chung. Another recently busted
financier is Maria Hsia, who helped organize the infamous Buddhist
temple fund-raiser that of course Gore says he knew nothing about.
The money has been collected, the campaign hard money phone calls
were illegally made from his office, and the people involved on his
behalf have been busted, but Gore remains free to run for president
because -- what? -- the mighty U.S. Department of Justice has "no
controlling legal authority"?

There's little else to look forward to in a potential Gore
administration other than more of the same.
What else could Gore promise? We already know he's a liar and a
fraud, and although he may be "more honest" than his boss, Clinton, what
good does knowing that do? He is still a liar and no doubt would rely on
the power of the federal government -- perhaps Reno or another Reno-like
character -- to protect him in office by obfuscating the truth and
thwarting investigations before they even begin.
So either the federal government has a boatload of ignoramuses for
prosecuting attorneys (not very likely) or Reno is purposefully blocking
investigators from fingering Gore and ruining his (read, the
Democrats') chances of screwing this country over for another
presidential term.
That makes Reno one of the lowest forms of life; besides being
selfish and agenda-minded rather than interested in the rule of law, it
also makes her perhaps the nation's biggest hypocrite -- demanding that
the rest of us follow the laws but not herself or those she is charged
with keeping an eye on.

Meanwhile, she shamelessly collects her AG salary as though she
deserves it and has earned it. Man, oh, man, that takes some hubris.
Lots of readers accuse this Web paper of being "biased" against the
Clinton administration. Forget it. If GOP presidential nominee George
W. Bush wins in November and his administration is equally scandalous,
then our coverage will be equally harsh; count on it.
However, I do have a feeling that -- thanks to people like Reno --
Clinton's corrupt act will be a tough one to follow. We'll see.
