Group targets Yahoo! porn

The American Family Association is launching a nationwide petition drive, calling upon Yahoo! and its sponsors “to get out of the pornography business.”

In May, WorldNetDaily reported it found the popular Web portal offering X-rated videos, DVD’s, magazines and more. One page on “Yahoo! Shopping” touted the lesbian graphic sex magazine, “On our backs.”

This, despite the Internet giant’s announcement three weeks prior that it had bowed to public outcry and abandoned its policy to boost profitability and “[removed] adult-related merchandise from [the] network.”

In a follow-up story earlier this month, the San Antonio Lightning reported that Yahoo! hosts hundreds of hidden porn sites in its clubs and recently acquired egroups sites that are accessible by minors willing to lie about their age. According to the newspaper, Yahoo! was removing adult sites from its indices of clubs but still hosting the “deleted sites.”

“If we aren’t informed that you have dropped your sponsorship of Yahoo!, we would be willing to boycott your products,” the American Family Association threatens in its online petition.

According to its website, the AFA is a non-profit organization that “stands for traditional family values, focusing primarily on the influence of television and other media – including pornography – on our society.”

“We believe in holding accountable the companies which sponsor programs attacking traditional family values,” the site states.

AFA plans to deliver submitted petitions to Yahoo! executives and sponsors on Sept. 1.

In his April statement announcing the porn-policy reversal, Yahoo! President and CEO Jeff Mallett declared, “We consistently strive to act responsibly and constantly evaluate our policies based on what our users tell us.”

AFA hopes to provide the company with an earful.
