"It was my fate to be in turn a witness to each of the two great faiths of our time."
– Whittaker Chambers
And so it is to us, as well. Some will connect the name of Whittaker Chambers with Alger Hiss. The more secular-minded will quickly surmise that the two great faiths mentioned above are communism and capitalism. They will be wrong. To many religious people, the two great faiths will appear wearing the clothes of God and the devil; perhaps Islam and Christianity, or Judaism and Buddhism. They, too, will be wrong.

It is a great puzzle to some of us why so many of America's recent leaders have been traitors. This is true not only in government, but in the church, law, education, arts and
entertainment, science and even the family. The office they campaigned so hard to win, and swore to serve, they instead betray. Whether at the level of international relations; at home
where the FBI agent denies his country; in church where the minister or priest no longer believes the tenants of his faith – down to the deeply personal level of husband, wife, parent and child – betrayal is everywhere. Adultery and divorce are only the more personal faces of treason; those we love its victims. And so I find myself wondering, what is so powerful that it causes men and women to betray all that they hold dear?
In the national realm, three areas of widespread treason should be evident to all: Those who oppose a missile defense for America. Those who propose open borders with amnesty for lawbreakers. And those trading with the enemy for personal and corporate gain. For in each case, America's vulnerability in the world is multiplied, and with it, our safety and security diminished.
Those who oppose missile defense have a long history of despising America's ability to speak out in the world on behalf of human freedom and dignity. But even more – they oppose our ability to act. The time has come to ask ourselves, why? Why do they seek
America's vulnerability to incinerated cities, when an alternative exists? Why do they seek to put us into a position where we can be blackmailed by statists and third world dictators? Why do they despise the voice of freedom speaking out on behalf of oppressed men and women in the world?
What of those who would dilute our language, culture and shared values by retroactively legalizing lawbreaking? At the stroke of a pen, American culture and strength would be diluted with millions upon millions of perhaps well-meaning people, but people who broke the law to arrive here for their own benefit! They can't read, write, or even speak our language, and they have no clue about the responsibilities of American citizenship. But they
will vote. By all means let us welcome people of all cultures into America – once they understand and pledge allegiance to American freedom and sovereignty, can communicate in the English language, and subscribe to the responsibilities of citizenship. Cowering illegals benevolently granted legality, while they may express their gratitude at the voting booth to their ruling masters, are an anathema to a free society. Their "integration" into American society is not integration at all; it is wholesale, intentional dilution of American culture and values to preserve the power of those who have shown they can never again be trusted

Is trade with our ideological enemies – who could well be our battlefield enemies tomorrow – any less treason? Humanitarian relief? By all means! But today's multinational corporations are by definition loyal to no nation. It was once boasted that, "What's good for GM is good for America!" Do you think that is any longer true? Where once corporate success depended upon American success – today our nation and its citizens are simply
one more resource to be exploited and used to decorate the next quarter's profit and loss statement. Growth and investment are good goals and can lift everyone – but where they come at the expense of building up a belligerent regime that despises our values as much as it covets our know-how, then to provide the rope to hang ourselves is indeed folly. But when you know that we may well face that regime on the battlefield – such behavior
goes beyond folly, to treason.
Is there a common thread in such widespread treason? Our opening quote touched upon it. To the secular world, those martyred for their religious faith are unsophisticated fools – as Jesus was to die on the cross. "Simply renounce your faith – say what your accusers want to hear – and believe whatever you like," is their advice. But is that really the way they live their own lives? Certainly they fail to understand that, to the true believer, such repudiation of closely held beliefs is unthinkable. Yet as Whittaker Chambers understood, the world's secular sophisticates are themselves in the grip of the second great faith of our age. As with the true believer who worships God – whether he be Christian, Jew, or Muslim – renunciation of the secular true believer's faith is equally unthinkable to him.
Thus Alger Hiss took from America a privileged life and an elitist education – but he could not renounce his secular worldly faith – for it was his reason to live. Treason against
the nation that bore him was more palatable. Hiss' ideological descendants are with us today, and their choice will be no different. That is why some of us have come to believe that the
battle for freedom is no longer political (if it ever was) – but spiritual. As Whittaker Chambers so clearly understood when he wrote in "Witness" (Regnery, 1952):
"It is not new. It is, in fact, man's second oldest faith. Its promise was whispered in the first days of the Creation under the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil: 'Ye shall be as gods.' It is the great alternative faith of mankind. Like all great faiths, its force derives from a simple vision. Other ages have had great visions. They have always been different visions of the same vision: the vision of God and man's relationship to God.
"The Communist vision is the vision of Man without God. It is the vision of man's mind displacing God as the creative intelligence of the world. It is the vision of man's liberated mind, by the sole force of its rational intelligence, redirecting man's destiny and reorganizing man's life in the world. It is the vision of man, once more the central figure of the Creation, not because God made man in His image, but because man's mind makes him the most intelligent of the animals. Copernicus and his successors displaced man as the central fact of the universe by proving that the earth was not the central star of the universe. Communism restores man to his sovereignty by the simple method of denying God."
