The head of the Reform Party USA has leveled criticism at Democrats and Republicans for failing to adequately protect the “dwindling Social Security Trust Fund.”
“Once again, Washington politicians have shown that they do not understand their obligation to the American taxpayers to maintain fiscal responsibility,” said Chairman Gerald Moan.
In a statement released last week, Reform Party officials said neither of the two major parties “has lived up to campaign pledges to fix the problems with Social Security and its dwindling trust fund.”
“During the 2000 campaign, candidates from both major parties consistently appealed to baby boomers with their solemn oath to fix Social Security and Medicare,” said the statement.
But Moan said he wants to remind Americans that “the politicians got the votes they needed, but the taxpayers will not be getting the Social Security reform they need anytime soon.”
He said in order to maintain the promised level of funding for Social Security, “fiscally responsible budget cuts on pork-barrel line items should be the order of the day when Congress returns to work next week.”
By cutting spending in a few line items and trimming foreign aid, Moan said Congress could easily find the $9 billion it needs to flesh out the White House’s $1.9 trillion budget “instead of once again tapping into the Social Security Trust Fund.”
The Reform Party advocates fiscal responsibility “and a balanced budget.”
