Mideast reporters preparing to evacuate

Newspapers in the United States have told their correspondents based in Israel to prepare to go to Syria, Egypt and elsewhere in the Persian Gulf, ostensibly in preparation for U.S. military responses following Tuesday’s serial terrorist attacks.

The Jerusalem Post reported that “the purpose of the reassignments would be to cover the eventuality of any U.S. attack against Iraq, Iran, or Afghanistan, states accused of supporting terrorism.”

The paper quoted official Israel Army Radio broadcasts.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials announced some progress in figuring out who committed two separate terrorist attacks using four U.S. airliners yesterday.

“We have identified a number of people who may have had something to do with the attacks,” said newly appointed FBI Director Robert Mueller. “We have identified individuals in a number of locations” that may have been involved in the attacks.

Mueller also dispelled earlier reports that terrorist suspects had actually been arrested. But, he vowed: “We will leave no stone unturned until we discover who was responsible for this attack on our freedom.”

Attorney General John Ashcroft, appearing at a joint news conference with Mueller, confirmed that 3-6 terrorists were involved in each hijacking, and that the terrorists used plastic knives or box cutters as weapons to subdue the crews and passengers of each plane.

Also, Ashcroft said officials have “reason to believe” that the White House and Air Force One were initial terrorist targets.
