I have no idea what our leaders will ultimately decide to do to "punish" the bastards responsible for killing perhaps 20,000 or more innocent Americans last Tuesday in a series of well-coordinated airliner attacks in New York City and at the Pentagon. However, if the "solution" is to "arrest those responsible and bring them to trial," that isn't going to be good enough.
I'm a God-fearing Christian and I hate all of this violence – let me just say that. But our country is under attack – this is what war is, folks – and we have a right to defend ourselves.

We should begin by insisting that our leaders make the long-term commitment now – not later – to dedicate the manpower, resources and military power to finding and eradicating every cowardly terrorist lunatic that exists on this planet. If my past military experience is required to help us accomplish this, that's fine – Uncle Sam knows where he can find me.
Secondly, Americans need to wake up to the realization that our failure to give a damn what our leaders were doing on our behalf in the past is part of the reason why we were attacked.

We have let moral reprobates, liars, cheats, thieves, losers and lawyers screw us and this country for so long, we came to expect to be treated that way. Anytime a society loses that much faith in its leadership, bad things like Tuesday's attacks are bound to happen.
As usual, it took a horrendous disaster to get us off our duffs and back into the game. We had to watch tens of thousands of our countrymen get incinerated – all on television, of course – before we decided to put down our petty political and social differences and decide to work together. We had to see planes being flown into some of our most valuable assets before we woke up to the fact that there are a helluva lot more important things in life than Monday Night Football, a new SUV or having sex with every Tom or Jane we meet.

There is an evil "out there," an evil that wants to destroy all of us. That little revelation may come as a shock to the many moral relativists we have in this country, but we just witnessed it. There's no denying it anymore.
And since there is an easily defined "evil," there must also be an easily recognizable force for "good." That "good" used to be inherently American – it must be that way again.
We can kill every terrorist on the planet – and we should – but that won't entirely solve our problems. Once we make our society safe, we must work every single day to keep it safe. We must learn to value life – especially life in America, because we have so much – and we must learn to value what is truly important.
We must repent of our sins, as the saying goes, or trust me, our society will be attacked again and again until it crumbles.
