Why was the World Trade Center destroyed by kamikaze-style Islamic terrorist airline hijackers?
Why did 5,000 Americans perish Sept. 11?
Why was the Pentagon attacked?
To hear former President Bill Clinton explain it, the United States of America is “paying a price today” for its past sins of slavery and for looking “the other way when a significant number of native Americans were dispossessed and killed.”
That’s what he told 1,000 students at Georgetown University Wednesday evening, according to news reports.
“This country once looked the other way when a significant number of native Americans were dispossessed and killed to get their land or their mineral rights or because they were thought of as less than fully human,” Clinton said. “And we’re still paying the price today.”
After eight years of Bill Clinton, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by anything. Yet, I’ve got to tell you, this statement – and its timing – take my breath away. I’m nearly speechless – nearly.
Just a few weeks ago, I recall Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson being pilloried for suggesting that America needed, as part of an act of contrition over the terrorist attacks, to answer for its past and present sins. There was outrage. People were incensed. How dare they?
And, indeed, their timing could have been better.
But this is the former president of the United States! Indeed, this is the former president, most well-remembered for his well-publicized knack for committing sin without remorse, without confession, without acknowledgement and certainly without repentance.
Now, less than two months after the most dramatic attack on the United States in its history, he is lecturing the American people on their collective guilt. He does this in full view of the whole world, including our enemies.
What on earth does America’s history with slavery and Indian atrocities have to do with Islamic terrorism in the 21st century? Only Bill Clinton sees a connection.
I guess he doesn’t realize that slavery still exists today throughout much of the Islamic world. I guess he doesn’t realize that our enemies in this war still persecute and kill indigenous peoples. And I guess he doesn’t realize his own personal and political culpability for the tragic events of Sept. 11.
If Bill Clinton knew America had it coming, why didn’t he do anything to warn the country? Why didn’t he do anything to prevent it?
Let’s recall the climate Bill Clinton created upon taking office in 1993.
In an unprecedented action, he fired every U.S. attorney in the country, replacing them all with his own political appointees. He brought in Janet Reno as attorney general, who would personally supervise the incineration and massacre of innocent men, women and children at a church in Waco, Texas. He hired as FBI director, Louis Freeh. The FBI issued a report, on Clinton’s watch, explaining that the No. 1 terrorist threat facing America came from right-wing Christians, not Islamists.
After the Oklahoma City bombing, his FBI ignored evidence of a link to Osama bin Laden. After the downing of TWA Flight 800, his FBI ignored the overwhelming eyewitness evidence of a missile attack on the civilian airliner. That’s because Bill Clinton saw only one threat to his own political ambitions – and that threat came from the right in the form of a vast conspiracy.
He coddled the Taliban in Afghanistan, pouring U.S. taxpayer aid into that corrupt, oppressive and backward regime. His hand-picked “Bin Laden Task Force” missed opportunities to take out the terrorist who would wreak so much havoc on this country. The FBI had more important priorities – looking under every bed in America for a member of the vast, right-wing conspiracy.
I do agree with Bill Clinton on one thing: America does have some things to reflect on, some sins of the past for which we will be forced to pay over and over again, some transgressions that are unexplainable, horrible, unimaginable.
And none of those errors can top the fact that we as a nation – we as a people – elected this grotesque caricature to the highest office in the land.
