Bernard Goldberg, the veteran CBS newsman who is set to release a new book detailing the liberal bias of the mainstream media, is about to become a pariah in his own industry.
That's because his book promises to be the best reporting done by a major media figure in decades. It contains substantial proof from his insider's perspective that all our suspicions about the major media in this country leaning decidedly left are true.

As Brett Bozell, executive director of the Media Research Center has suggested, Goldberg should not be cast out by his colleagues. Rather, he should be hailed as a hero – his expose is nothing short of the kind of whistleblowing salivated over by network and newspaper chieftains alike.
But the mainstream media, which can't stand to be scrutinized – especially if that scrutiny comes from someone who knows of what he speaks – will be hard-pressed to refute this insider, though the lefty media types are already trying nonetheless.

But methinks they doth protest too much. A few examples of the futility of the mainstream to deny its obvious leftist bias are in order:
- Was it not CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather who was busted for showing up at a state Democratic Party fundraiser in Texas?
- After being a liberal Democrat all his life, newly elected NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg – who won as a Republican – was asked by "Meet the Press'" Tim Russert if the "Republican Party has been too conservative, even extreme, on some issues?" – as if Bloomberg were even qualified to answer that. When was the last time you heard a mainstream show host or newsie ask Tom Daschle or Richard Gephardt if they thought Democrats have been "too liberal – even extreme – on some issues?"
- Three weeks into the war against terrorism, NBC's Today show questioned President Bush's legitimacy by bringing on author Jeffrey Toobin, who declared that, "after a year of investigation … Al Gore won (the 2000 election)." All Today show co-host Katie Couric could muster as a response was to quote from Toobin's book: "The wrong man was inaugurated on January 20th 2001, and this is no small thing in our nation's history. The bell of this election can never be un-rung and the sound will haunt us for some time." This, despite reports that day from commissions examining the ballots that Gore did lose and Bush did win.
- A month after the Sept. 11 attacks, anthrax spores began showing up in mail sent to some lawmakers and, ironically, media figures. The New York Times immediately found a Harvard University professor who claimed that "right wing" figures in America – not Islamic terrorists or "left wing" figures – had to be responsible for it. Most other major news agencies picked up on this story as well, most without ever questioning the professor's veracity.
- Newsweek columnist-reporter Eleanor Clift has accused the American people of being stupid. She declared during an interview on the Fox News Channel Dec. 3 that there was high public approval of military tribunals for suspected terrorists because "I don't think most people understand" its concept. "Americans are frightened and they want to believe that this president can get us through this period in our lives," she continued.
- Steve Roberts of US News and World Report has accused Attorney General John Ashcroft of putting fairness "at risk." Instead, he believes Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy's approach to the war on terrorism is best: "think Pat Leahy is right when he says we have to be able to hold our head high when this war is over," the former New York Times reporter declared on CNN's Late Edition, Dec. 2. Further admonishing Ashcroft, he continued: "We have to be able to show to the world that not only have we won, we've won fairly, and we've dealt fairly with the people we've captured, and I think that Ashcroft has put that at risk."

And speaking of the Fox News Channel, it's the only "mainstream" network that gets it. FNC's presentation of fair and balanced news reporting is earning it all-time high ratings and viewership. The network execs are even encouraging reporters, anchors and show hosts to express their patriotism in the country they too are serving – which is helping boost viewership even more.
Bernard Goldberg himself may be a lifelong liberal Democrat, but that may not last long after his book hits the streets in force. The degree of savaging he's going to get from his vindictive colleagues will be directly related to how well his book does – and if it does real well, as I think it will, his lefty colleagues just might make a conservative out of him before it's all said and done.
That would give them something to cover – and it likely wouldn't be favorable coverage.
But then, that would prove Bernie's point all over again, wouldn't it?
