The Big Media crackup

Yes, it's finally happening, people. The Big Media are imploding.

• The Internet is allowing people to get news they never would have seen when the Big Four (ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN) had a hammerlock on information.

It is this latest development – the phenomenon of Bill O'Reilly that I want to focus on today.

The Big Media are not going to go down easy. They are not going to go away without a fight. And Big Government will do all in its power to keep "safe" TV journalism alive and ticking for as long as it can.

That's why O'Reilly is under attack. I make that statement advisedly. It is not rhetorical overkill. They are all coming after him with guns blazing – because he represents a real threat to the media "statist quo," sometimes called, in these parts, the "government-media complex."

Now, I don't agree with Bill O'Reilly all the time. Sometimes I disagree with him vehemently. As I have said many times before, I think O'Reilly has way too much trust in Big Government to fix things.

But, here's the point: Never before in the recent history of the Big Media has there been a guy who cannot be controlled. That's O'Reilly's key to success – and it's also the reason he represents such a threat.

He's unpredictable – just as journalists are supposed to be. He is unafraid – just as journalists are supposed to be. He cannot be intimidated – even by his own network.

The O'Reilly phenomenon should give us great hope – not because he is going to save us, but because his success illustrates that we can break through the media monopoly and get the truth to the American people.
