Hollywood is pulling trailers from theaters for an upcoming science-fiction film, but it appears the shuttle Columbia disaster won’t scrub the planned March 28 release date of “The Core.”
The movie starring Hilary Swank and Aaron Eckhart is about astronauts who try to save the Earth from a problem with its magnetic field.

The trailer shows a scene in which the magnetic field is affecting the shuttle, and “terranauts” try to figure out how to land the orbiter safely. The preview was deemed too similar to the tragic events of Saturday leading to the deaths of Columbia’s seven astronauts during re-entry to the atmosphere.
“We wanted to be sensitive to the tragedy and show respect for the families that have lost loved ones,” Nancy Kirkpatrick of Paramount Pictures told USA Today.
A statement from the film company said while trailers were being pulled, there was no intention of delaying the movie’s release at the end of next month.
“‘The Core’ portrays the shuttle crew in a heroic and successful endeavor,” the statement said. “We have no plans to change our release date or change the film.”
The movie was initially due for release last November, but was delayed to give the filmmakers extra time to enhance special effects.
Hollywood reacted in similar fashion by pulling products in the aftermath of Sept. 11 and the D.C. sniper attacks.
