Security officials in Kuwait have been warned that al-Qaida has ordered its members to carry out attacks inside Kuwait, the key staging area for U.S. military ground operations into Iraq.
Al-Qaida spokesman Abu Ghayth recently sent instructions to cell members in Kuwait to launch attacks against both U.S. and Kuwaiti targets.
The warning was based on information gathered recently in Pakistan, intelligence officials said.
Abu Ghayth’s message reportedly originated from Osama bin Laden. It urges al-Qaida members in Kuwait to reorganize and step up operations against U.S. and British military forces in the country.
Authorities in Kuwait are on alert for possible truck bombs. The recent incident in which a truck driven by a Kuwaiti crashed into a line of U.S. soldiers is believed to have been an al-Qaida attack, officials said.
U.S. intelligence officials are especially concerned that al-Qaida will attempt to bomb the U.S. Army and Marine Corps camps in northern Kuwait.
To deal with the threat, Kuwait’s government has set up a special internal security unit to investigate al-Qaida sympathizers within the Kuwaiti government.
Kuwait is believed to have a large number of al-Qaida sympathizers and a small number of operational members. Recent intelligence reports indicate hardline Islamists have moved in to Kuwait.

Meanwhile, U.S. military forces killed more than 23 al-Qaida terrorists in the recent attack on the training camp of the group Ansar al-Islam in northern Iraq, according to U.S. intelligence officials.
An April 3 battle near the camp in Uraman, Sulaymaniyah province, was carried out by airstrikes and ground attacks by Kurdish Peshmergas and U.S. Special Forces commandos, officials said.
Numerous foreign nationals were killed at the camp, including Saudis, Afghans, Moroccans and Algerians. All were found carrying foreign visas.
A large number of weapons and explosives were also recovered in the raid.
