Although James Perloff, best known for his highly popular books “The Case Against Darwin” and “Tornado in a Junkyard,” writes persuasively in favor of creation and against evolution, he himself has evolved into something completely different – as evidenced by his new music CD, “Freedom Shall Return.”
In a word: If you have traditional values, but also enjoy great pop music, you’ll love this unique album.
“I was a child of the ’60s,” says Perloff. “Back then, there was a huge cultural transformation. Leading that transformation was – not movies, not poetry, but music, with the Beatles at the helm. Therefore I believe a very important way to renew our culture is through music.”
Perloff has an interesting observation about Christians, conservatives and libertarians: “They talk about issues, but rarely sing about them.”
There is plenty of contemporary Christian music, he notes, but it mostly focuses on praise, worship and evangelism.
“If you turn on Christian radio, you can listen to a very animated talk show, where people discuss issues that concern them – for instance, not being able to pray in public schools, or how conservatives don’t get a fair shake in the news media,” he says. “But when the show’s over and the station cuts back to music, it’s all praise and worship. Few people seem to connect issues to music.”
In the ’60s – when, notes Perloff, “I was an atheist” – people sang about the Vietnam war, about civil rights, the new morality and other hot topics. “Not that most of rock was issues-driven,” he says, “but it was certainly mixed in, and the effects were powerful. Also, the music itself was usually well-crafted.”
Taking a cue from the ’60s, Perloff has written 12 memorable songs that are strong on both melody and message, performed by outstanding musicians and produced by the talented Sang of Stomp Machine Productions in Salem, Mass. Released through Refuge Books, the CD appears destined to become hot bumper music for talk radio:
- “Castlegate Love,” the album’s opening number, is about a Christian woman seeking an “equally yoked” man.
- “Where Did All the Holidays Go?” decries the commercialization of holidays.
- Snappy “Home-School Kids” extols the benefits of homeschooling.
- “Echoes of Vietnam,” a tribute to the veterans of that war, is a story about a dying vet having a flashback to battle.
- “Goodbye to Darwin” takes aim at the cultural impact of reducing people to animals.
- The album picks up speed with “Network News,” ’50s-style rock ‘n’ roll that whacks liberal media bias – and just happens to plug WorldNetDaily!
- “The Lost Cause,” a haunting ode to the South of Robert E. Lee, is odds-on to be a hit in Dixie.
- The high-powered “Let Revival Break Out,” a pure gospel tune, will make you dance.
- “The Fifties” is nostalgia about better times.
- “Say ‘No’ to The New World Order” champions American sovereignty.
- “Freedom Shall Return,” the title song, is a dramatic call to restore religious liberty to America, especially in public schools.
- The last cut, “Congress is Back in Session,” is strictly for laughs, featuring a big-mouthed congressman who brags about spending and vote fraud.
