My husband, the graduate

By Cassandra Walker

Two years ago during the winter months, my husband came to me and declared he was going back to school to obtain his masters degree in business.

I nodded slightly and kept on cooking. You see my husband has declared that to me before but changed his mind after remembering how much reading was involved. He has a full load at his job, and with traveling a large part of the United States, I knew he would be in over his head.

So I just nodded and pretended like I believed him. After all, this is the man who avoided writing papers at any cost when he was getting his undergraduate degree. Why, once he talked me into writing his own mother a letter.

I knew if I didn’t say a word, he would eventually come to his senses and give up the whole idea.

“I have a plan this time, I will go to the University of Phoenix, St. Louis branch and take classes on Monday nights.” He rambled on.

Who did he think he was fooling? My husband, the avid football enthusiast, miss Monday Night football. Please!

I could still hear him going on and on about this masters degree.

“I will go for two years and a few of my good friends are going through the class with me, David Winslow and Kristen Davis. Together we could make it,” he said excitedly.

Wait a minute – did I hear him say Kristen Davis. She has to be one of the most organized people on the earth. David Winslow was another name mentioned – he is a very determined man.

Perhaps my husband was serious this time.

Over the next two years, I saw my husband successfully juggle work and school. Some nights, he would stay up until the crack of dawn working on papers and projects. It was inspiring to watch him work so hard for something so important to him.

Flash forward to June 2003. I find myself standing and applauding as my husband is crossing the stage and being hooded for his master’s degree in business.

By his side are Kristen Davis and David Winslow. They all made it, together.

Now, if my husband tells me he is going to do something, I tell him, “Yes you can dear, yes you can.”

Cassandraism: Never underestimate a man with a purpose.

Thanks for sharing.
