Editor’s note: Business Reform Magazine provides real biblical answers for real business issues.
This week Wal-Mart announced that they were expanding their non-discrimination policies to include non-discrimination against homosexuals. Although true discrimination, in any form, is abhorrent, this move represents another major victory for the anti-God crowd as they seek to destroy the biblical definitions of marriage and family.
Certainly, Wal-Mart is not yet recognizing gay and lesbian “marriages”, but as we’ve seen many times before, when a company explicitly acknowledges the “rights” of gays and lesbians as a supposed protected class, it is the first step down the slippery slope towards dissolution of the family as defined by God in creation.
God works through families. When He created humanity, He created us as man and woman and he joined the man and woman together in marriage. He commanded the man to work and created the woman to be a helpmate. He blessed them with children and the children provided an ongoing legacy, continuing the work of the parents in stewarding God’s creation.
The family is the fundamental building block that God has used for all of society. Children are taught God’s ways primarily through the family and God blesses righteous men and women through their children – through families. Cities, towns, nations, and yes, businesses and our entire economy are built through families.
As Dennis Peacocke writes in the latest issue of Business Reform magazine, “Economics and family, then, are fully intertwined in God. They were birthed by Him out of a corporate act of labor, using common resources to produce and care for a race of beings that were told to ‘multiply and take dominion’ of God’s earthly resources. This process proceeds from a base of covenantal married family life, for the propagation of the race to the glory of God… God gave the resource development and management process of the earth to His created earthly family in Adam and Eve, His first son and daughter. He later reaffirmed this stewardship mandate in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.”
Historically, businesses have recognized this linkage between work and family. Healthy families result in productive workers. Companies have taken steps to encourage healthy families. At times, these steps have gone too far, but in their best light, they are validation of the corporate benefit of having healthy families.
Satan is not confused. He recognizes the strength God has placed in families and he is on the war path. Satan has unleashed his anti-God forces in an all out attack on the God-ordained family institutions of marriage and parenthood. These attacks are most obvious in the form of the “gay rights” agenda of claiming these God-ordained institutions for same-sex partners – the very relationships that God clearly condemns in His Word.
Over the past few weeks, these anti-God forces have been gaining steam.
First, came the Supreme Court’s ruling, striking down Texas’ anti-sodomy law. As Justice Antonin Scalia stated in his stinging dissent to that case: “This reasoning leaves on pretty shaky grounds state laws limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.” In other words, this ruling is a huge step towards man redefining marriage and families in a way counter to God’s definition, and a major blow against the foundation of our society and economy.
More recently business, in the form of Wal-Mart, has also joined the family bashing. This employer of over a million Americans, mostly in small-towns, has gone out of their way to prohibit discrimination against gays and lesbians. As homosexual activists loudly proclaim, Wal-Mart has become the 9th of the 10 largest companies to have such a policy. The lone holdout is Exxon Mobil.
Do I believe that there should be discrimination against homosexuals? No. I’m a sinner. You’re a sinner. If you’re my employer, as long as my sin doesn’t keep me from performing my job adequately, I hope you don’t discriminate against me.
But, if you love God, I hope that you hold me accountable – not in my job, but in our society – to God’s standards. If you know me to be your brother in Christ, then show your brotherly love by correcting me. If you don’t know me to be your brother, then show me God’s love by helping me to see how my sin keeps me separated from our Creator.
If you discriminate against me in my job, then I will be blind and deaf to your words of love.
This doesn’t require the creation of a special protected class of sinners!
If you own a business, or if you make policy decisions for a large business, don’t let the anti-God activists steer you wrong. Don’t discriminate against anyone. But don’t join in the destruction of God’s family institutions either!
