First the good news, Penthouse magazine's publisher filed for bankruptcy this week. Now the bad news. Penthouse isn't going away, in fact it's expanding. And worse, the company's problems aren't caused by increasing societal morality shunning sinful perversions, but rather by the increasing pervasiveness of pornography which makes Penthouse appear tame in comparison. And now the real kicker, Chapter 11 bankruptcy may allow the company to "restructure" in a way that actually makes it a more financially healthy company. That doesn't mean that Penthouse, and our society as a whole, won't remain morally bankrupt for eternity.
On Tuesday, August 12, General Media, Inc. filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors in New York. This means that the company will get a breather from the folks who have loaned them money over the years while they figure out how to reposition the company to be more profitable going forward. If all goes as planned, General Media won't be liquidated and Penthouse magazine won't be shut down. That is truly a shame. And I mean that literally.

It is truly a shame on our society because of the cause of Penthouse's problems. The magazine has lost almost two-thirds of its subscribers since 1998 because it is no longer "the leader" in its field. Penthouse always positioned itself as being more explicit and more "hard core" than Playboy, the primary competition. Despite the magazine's reported attempts to become increasingly "hard core", it is losing the battle. However, it is not losing the battle to Playboy or any other magazine. Instead, it is losing the battle to online pornography which plays even more strongly to the devious, sinful, perverted mind of fallen man. Online pornography can be delivered more discretely, more frequently, and less expensively than Penthouse's product. And unfortunately, online pornography can also take sexual perversions to their extreme end.
Penthouse's publisher wants a larger piece of that action. Under the protection of bankruptcy law, General Media plans to spend its available cash to expand its online operations. Undoubtedly, the company recognizes the opportunity to take its brand position to its logical end, sneaking increasing perversity into penthouses and row houses around the world.

Thankfully, we know that, in the final end, Penthouse and its exceedingly perverse competitors (online and print) will truly be judiciously declared bankrupt and will be "liquidated." However, until that glorious day, this battle rages on. Our foe continues to ever more loudly clash his weapons of war against God's holiness, no matter what documents may be deceptively filed in temporal courts of "law."
Paul commanded Timothy, and through him all believers: "Fight the good fight, keeping faith and good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith." And so we must. And so we will. Until the day of victory.
