As school vouchers are moving close to approval in Washington DC, some people are screaming about how vouchers would cost schools million of dollars, but the truth is, school vouchers are good business.
An average public school spends approximately $8,500 per pupil, with funding coming from many sources. If students were provided a voucher for $3,500, enough to make private alternatives possible for millions of parents, the school district would actually save $5,000 per student who accepted the voucher alternative! The extra money can then be ploughed back into public schools to educate other students.

And to top it off, private schools generally educate students for less money and achieve better results than most public schools.
Critics also complain that vouchers siphon off funds and leave behind special needs and children with learning disabilities. The good news to schools would be that when children use vouchers, the extra money left over in public schools would help those students remaining in public education.

Businesses today know the value and necessity of being customer driven and responding quickly and effectively to customers. Many public schools, however, are bureaucracy driven rather than customer driven. Parents, as customers, should have the choice of any school, whether it’s a religious school or not.
Allowing the government at all levels to determine the educational product, and allowing only that choice, except for those who can afford private alternatives, is as ludicrous as allowing only the government to sell cars. Imagine if the government, and the government alone, determined which cars would be manufactured and at what price. Customers would gag at the choices offered!

Today, parents are gagging at the failure of public education. The inner cities have been hit the hardest and these parents are in most need of the voucher system. It is time to let parents choose the make and model of their child’s education!
So the next time someone tells you that vouchers are wrong, just remember, vouchers are good business for everyone … except maybe for bureaucrats.
