Besides the recent controversies that have dogged neophyte politician Gen. Wesley Clark, the retired military man now must deal with the fact that Democrats abandon him in droves – according to a new poll – when his title is used with his name.

Possibly due to an aversion to all things military by certain members of the Democratic Party, Clark goes from No. 1 on the list of 10 presidential candidates to No. 4 when his title is used by pollsters.

In a recent nationwide poll by the New York Times and CBS News, Clark pulls 14 percent of the Democrats surveyed when his and others' titles are not used. He is followed in that poll by Howard Dean with 9 percent and Carol Moseley-Braun with 7.
But when the titles are affixed to each name, Clark drops to fourth place with 10 percent, and Rep. Richard Gephardt takes top honors with 15 percent, a 10-point increase from the poll where his title was not used. Sens. Joseph Lieberman and John Kerry also benefit from their congressional titles, garnering 13 and 11 percent respectively.

Half of the survey's sample was polled with the titles and half without. Likely primary voters were asked: "Who would you like to see the Democratic Party nominate as its presidential candidate in 2004?"
Clark has drawn controversy since entering the race for the Democratic presidential nomination for praising President Bush and several of his staff in a 2001 speech, for flip-flopping on the question of whether or not he supports the Iraq war effort, for having a friendly hat-exchange meeting with an indicted war criminal and for the fact he had not yet registered as a Democrat as of Wednesday.
