Maryland’s first lady is in hot water after jokingly stating at an anti-violence conference she would like to shoot pop star Britney Spears.
“Really, if I had an opportunity to shoot Britney Spears, I think I would,” Kendel Ehrlich, wife of Gov. Robert Ehrlich, told the crowd attending a domestic-violence prevention summit at Hood College in Frederick, Md.

The former prosecutor made the comment as part of her condemnation of the entertainment industry’s negative influence on youth. She accused 21-year-old Spears of exaggerating the importance of sex for young girls.
Spears, who’s known for her scantily clad, sexually suggestive performances, recently announced she was not a virgin.
After local radio station WFMD broadcast her comments, the first lady was forced to issue a statement defending herself.
“As a working mother raising a 4-year-old son, the first lady has concerns about the negative influences that the entertainment industry can have on young children and teen-agers,” spokeswoman Meghann Siwinski said. “During a public appearance, she inadvertently used a figure of speech to express those concerns.”
Gov. Ehrlich, who campaigned against gun control, has not commented on the controversy.
Spears has also not commented, but her record label, Jive Records, released a statement: “Since this unfortunate comment was made at a domestic violence prevention conference, it seems that Mrs. Ehrlich has shot her own self in the foot by promoting violence as well.”
