The ban … blocked!

The crowd assembled at the White House had given 10 standing ovations as the president spoke in preparation of the signing of the law. A law that better than seven out of 10 Americans say was long overdue.

“For years,” the president said, “a terrible form of violence has been directed against children who are inches from birth, while the law looked the other way. Today, at last, the American people and our government have confronted the violence and come to the defense of the innocent child.”

“America stands for liberty,” he continued. “For the pursuit of happiness and for the unalienable right of life. And the most basic duty of government is to defend the life of the innocent. Every person, however frail or vulnerable, has a place and a purpose in this world. Every person has a special dignity. This right to life cannot be granted or denied by government, because it does not come from government, it comes from the Creator of life.”

The ink was barely dry on the new law, and in the fell swoop of a federal judge’s pen in Nebraska, the partial-birth abortion ban was blocked.

There have been far too many instances in the past year when the federal judiciary appeared plain loopy, but this act verges on evil.

As first reported by NBC 4 in Lincoln, Neb., a federal judge issued an injunction on Wednesday, blocking implementation of a ban on certain late-term abortions (partial-birth abortions).

U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf said his ruling would likely apply only to Dr. LeRoy Carhart of Nebraska, and three other physicians who perform abortions. Those doctors are licensed to practice in Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, New York, South Carolina and Virginia. That means Kopf’s ruling potentially could extend to those states.

Because you see, to U.S. District Judge Kopf, it is more important for a doctor to have the right to thrust scissors into the back of the head of a baby less than two inches from birth, than it is for that child to come the final two inches and breathe its first breath of life outside the womb.

So a stalemate is what the left is determined to make it on the issue of allowing doctors to thrust scissors into the back of babies’ skulls and then suction the brains out until the head collapses (this is what happens in a “partial-birth procedure”). I guess it’s not morally questionable enough for their consciences to be pricked.

The judge felt he had the legal foundation to do this. Earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court had overturned a Nebraska state-sponsored partial-birth abortion ban. The court found in its rulings that the law was vague and did not address the issue of a woman’s health.

The federal version is different. Medical experts, as well as recognized pillars of the medical community like the American Medical Association, testified before Congress while the federal law was being considered. As to the procedure of jamming scissors into an otherwise healthy child’s head and then having its brains sucked dry until the head collapsed, not a single medical expert in all of the testimony before Congress could point to a possibility where the woman’s health would ever be dependent upon such a procedure.

I personally have talked with many labor and delivery nurses in hospitals in different regions of the U.S. – not a single one of them can come up with a “women’s health reason” that would dictate the use of scissors and sucking a baby’s brains dry.

The truth is, that in this country the majority of the people used to view themselves as “pro-choice” in the matter of abortion when polled annually on the question. A funny thing began to happen, though, as the light of what is called “partial-birth abortion” began to be seen. People began to have a conscience. This was not good for the abortion industry then, and today it simply scares them into extraordinary tactics.

Faced with the possibility of not being allowed to thrust a pair of scissors into the base of a child’s skull, Dr. LeRoy Carhart took action. File a suit! Get an injunction! Doctors must be allowed to thrust their scissors into babies’ heads!

The bright side in this episode of the history of the partial-birth abortion ban – or as I like to call it, the day the abortionists’ music died – is the administration has come out swinging.

A spokesman for the White House said, “This law will be vigorously defended and this law will be upheld.”

I pray that it is. And I do so because it sickens me to know Dr. LeRoy Carhart is continuing to experience the sound and feel of scissors penetrating babies’ skulls, and the gurgle of the suction tool as it swallows their brains.

And if 70 percent of Americans are sickened by the thought – then what’s keeping us from standing up for those whose brains are being stolen while they wait for two more inches of space – to have the life that God created them to have.

Of course, an obvious step would be to vote in a Senate in 2004 that would give us better judges, thus preventing this kind of thing in the future!
