Who wants to be first lady?

Internet dating meets liberal politics.

A group of political websites is sponsoring a contest to find a wife – and potentially a first lady – for Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

LiberalHearts.com, an Internet matchmaking service for political liberals, is asking single women: “Do you have what it takes to be presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich’s first lady?”

The contest, which already has several takers, was spawned in response to a comment the candidate made Nov. 5 at a Democratic presidential debate, said a statement from contest organizers.

When asked about the role of a first lady, Kucinich responded, “As a bachelor, I get a chance to fantasize about my first lady. … Maybe Fox would like to sponsor a national contest or something. … I would certainly want a dynamic, outspoken woman who was fearless in her desire for peace in the world, for universal single-payer health care and for a full-employment economy. If you’re out there, call me!”

Kucinich is widely seen as the most left-leaning of the Democratic candidates.

According to the statement, the “Who Wants to be a First Lady” contest is cosponsored by PoliticsCA.com, PoliticsNJ.com, PoliticsNY.com, PoliticsPA.com and PoliticsVT.com.

LiberalHearts.com explains the contest: “We will post profiles of interested single women, and at some point we’ll let our readers pick the best Kucinich running mate. If Congressman Kucinich agrees, PoliticsNH.com and LiberalHearts.com will fly the winner in to meet him and treat the two candidates to dinner.”

The site features profiles and photos of potential first ladies, ranging from age 20 to 58.

Said candidate “Barbara,” a journalist by trade: “Let’s face it – having a journalist in his camp – the future President Kucinich could save money and have the first lady double as his press secretary. Should a scandal of any kind pop up – who better to nip it in the bud than a reporter? (I’ve worked for the local media in Detroit, and nationally in New York City and Phoenix). When it comes time to write his life story – who better to make sure it’s presented in a positive light. Besides, I have a politically correct professional ballet dancer of a daughter. I can cook and bake a mean cheesecake from scratch. And from what I hear the congressman is a vegetarian … and I’m a non-meat-eater myself.”

Twenty-year-old “Geri” downplays her age.

“I find Dennis to be a very handsome man, and I would be so lucky if he even gave me a chance,” she enthuses. “I definitely fit Dennis’ profile of a dynamic, outspoken young lady. … I have high hopes and ambitions for myself, and I know I will reach the goals I have in mind. I’m looking for a special someone, mature and old enough to handle a strong, passionate lady like me. I may be young, but after all, age is nothing but a number.”

“Judy,” a 45-year-old Catholic is a bit more poetic: “I stand my ground on the good fights as a true liberal can. I am confident and compassionate all in the same whispering breath.”

She concludes her profile by saying, “Gee, this is exciting. I’m a novice with this solicitation approach and find it a bit ‘tingling.'”
