Five-star Gen. Omar Bradley died this day, April 8, 1981. During World War II, he commanded the Army in North Africa, and in 1944 led the 12th Army Group in France and Germany, which consisted of 1 million men in four armies. In 1950, he became the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Omar Bradley stated: "We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. ... The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants."
