James Cantalupo, 60, died from an apparent heart attack in Orlando just hours before he was slated to address a group of franchisees at the company's worldwide convention.
According to WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach, Fla., local veterans began complaining of the flag action, saying Old Glory shouldn't be lowered on a national scale for the death of a non-veteran or non-government employee.
One franchise visited by the CBS affiliate raised its flag shortly after a visit by the station's news crew, then later claimed the flag must have just "fell down after someone loosened it."
