A production company has bought the film and television options on WND Books’ “Illegals: The Imminent Threat Posed by Our Unsecured U.S.-Mexico Borders” by Jon Dougherty.
In “Illegals,” Dougherty documents the hard truth both major political parties have missed – namely, that sustained high immigration levels from south of the border will continue to pose economic, labor, security and criminal threats to the United States, unless American and Mexican leaders find ways to limit it. Dougherty brings the reader to the border – and all its dangers – through exclusive interviews and engaging prose.
Latte Da Productions, of Jacksonville, Ore., has purchased the film and TV options. Mike Erwin, along with partners Sam Baldoni and J. Max Kirishima have been producing independent feature films in all genres since 1989. The partners have either produced, executive produced, presented or financed 20 feature films, all of which have earned or are in the process of earning worldwide distribution, the company said in a statement.
One or more of the producers have been involved in making “Tomcat,” starring Richard Greico; “Bulletproof Heart,” starring Mimi Rogers, Anthony LaPagglia and Peter Boyle; “Double Cross,” starring Kelly Preston and Patrick Bergin; and “Bluehill Avenue,” starring William Forsythe, Allen Payne and Clarence Williams III.
Erwin was upbeat about the big-screen potential for “Illegals.”
“At a time when national security is at its highest, Jon Dougherty’s book blows your mind,” he said. “It read like a feature film. It’s a story whose time has come.”
Added Baldoni, “[We] will develop the screenplay with an A-List Hollywood writer and it’ll make the rounds to Hollywood’s top literary agents.”
Erwin says the film is slated for development in 2004 and production in 2005.
“We believe this timely and exciting story will attract any number of today’s top stars. It has all the elements of hit action films,” he said.
Action, indeed. In his book, Dougherty documents the many incidents of Americans being targets of gunfire from Mexican soldiers, drug runners and others.
