Bill Clinton’s recent statement about his sex scandal with Monica Lewinsky?”I did it because I could”?is an outrageous example for business people.
Who would agree that Enron should gouge customers? Would such a defense?”We did it because we could”?fly with prosecutors and a jury? Enron is being sued in an attempt to recover alleged overcharging.
When WorldCom cooked the books, would investors and creditors accept with an uncaring shrug?”We cooked the books because we could?” Can you imagine that statement keeping any convicted criminal out of the slammer?
When insiders trade illegally and reap huge profits, who would expect that saying “We traded our stock illegally because we could” would wash with a court? Should a businessperson shortchange an eight year old, “just because they can?”
The apostle James wrote, “to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is a sin” (James 4:17 NASB).
Every day, folks are tempted to commit illegal or immoral acts. The question only becomes, “Will we act out that temptation?” And if we do, there are supposed to be consequences that fit the crime. It’s called the moral law of sowing and reaping. All the laws of this land stem from that Judeo-Christian tenet found in Scripture. Without this God-given principle, daily life would become chaotic and untenable.
In the world of business, company officials who cheat or engage in all sorts of other illegal activities are often found being punished. In most companies, a senior executive caught fooling around with an intern, in the office, during business hours, would be summarily dismissed. Would an exec say, “I did it because I could” and hope to get away with it? Could any of us say that, expecting to get away with it?
Clinton’s statement outrages our very sense of right and wrong.
