A British town wants to hire someone for the post of "condom coordinator" to help provide teen-agers as young as 13 with contraceptives, sparking outrage in the UK, reports The Sun newspaper of London.
The Wigan town council, in the Manchester area, created the post to lower the rising percentage of teen pregnancies, the paper said yesterday.

The position will pay 22,000 British pounds annually, or about $40,000.

"If you go around handing condoms out to teenagers, what kind of message are you giving out? It will just encourage them to go and have sex and make the situation worse," said town councillor, Mike Winstanley, a member of the Conservative party, according to The Sun.
"This is grossly irresponsible. The job title itself just shows how low they can sink," Norman Wells of the group Family Youth and Concern told the paper.

The council resolutely defended its new post, however.
"Encouraging young people who are sexually active to use condoms is important," a Wigan Council spokesman said. "Councils are often criticized for meaningless job titles. This does exactly what it says on the tin."
