“Done … the seventeenth day of September, in the year of our LORD one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven.” This was the last line of U.S. Constitution, which was approved this day. A study done by professors Donald Lutz and Charles Hyneman, examining nearly 15,000 writings of the 55 men who wrote the Constitution, including newspaper articles, pamphlets, books and monographs, reported that the Bible, especially the book of Deuteronomy, contributed 34 percent of all direct quotations. When indirect citations were included, they found the majority of all quotations referenced by the founders were derived from the Bible.
