Is Islam Peaceful? Its scriptures say ‘No’

Every religion is the product of two things: the life of its founder and the teachings of its holy books. Devotees who emulate the founder and do what their scriptures advocate are true practitioners of the religion. Those who ignore or deny his teachings and example are not.

That simple premise is the foundation of Craig Winn’s latest book, “Prophet of Doom.” We hear from our media and politicians that “Islam is a peaceful religion.” They say, “Radical extremists have hijacked their religion.” If this were true, Winn says, it would be reflected in the Islamic scriptures. But these books present an entirely different picture?one of violence, hate, greed, deception and debauchery.

There is more to Islam than the Quran, a haphazard jumble of pronouncements supposedly from Allah himself. The Quran says nothing about Muhammad’s life and teachings. It’s devoid of historical context and admittedly self-contradictory?older surahs are said to be “abrogated,” replaced, by newer, better ones. But without chronology, the Quran doesn’t reveal which are which.

The missing context is provided by the Sira of Ibn Ishaq, a second biography by al-Tabari, and the Hadith of al-Bukhari. Winn has painstakingly correlated these Islamic holy books with the Qur’an, revealing Islam to be a doctrine of war and conquest, and its prophet a pirate and pedophile. Christians and Jews are to be plundered and killed, and peaceful Muslims are condemned as “hypocrites.”
