Michael Moore off hook
for underwear gimmick

Michigan prosecutors won’t bring charges against filmmaker Michael Moore who state Republicans say broke the law when he offered new underwear and food to young people who promised to vote in the presidential election.

On Tuesday, the Michigan GOP asked prosecutors in counties where Moore had spoken to bring charges against him. State law prohibits offering something of value in exchange for agreeing to vote.

“It’s ironic that Republicans have no problem with allowing assault weapons out on our streets, yet they don’t want to put clean underwear in the hands of our slacker youth,” Moore said, according to the Associated Press. “The Republicans seem more interested in locking me up for trying to encourage people to participate in our democracy than locking up bin Laden for his attacks on our democracy.”

According to AP, prosecutors in Isabella, Ingham and Antrim counties said they determined no action was warranted. A spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said today that election law violations should be handled by the attorney general’s office.

“Alleging that a person is attempting to buy votes is a serious allegation, and one that is taken seriously by this office. However, your request to prosecute Mr. Moore trivializes the intent of this section of the election code,” wrote Antrim County’s Charles Koop in a letter to Greg McNeilly, executive director of the Michigan Republican Party.

Isabella County’s Larry Burdick said he chooses “to devote our resources to prosecuting those who are delivering cocaine to our young people rather than underwear,” AP reported.

Moore is touring the company and urging young people he calls “slackers” to vote.
