Those attacking John Bolton, nominated to be our next ambassador to the United Nations, seem to be blind to a basic principle of leadership.
His accusers charge that he transferred or attempted to discharge subordinates who disagreed with his policies. However, in business, a staff has a responsibility to follow its leader and execute his plan. Yes, leaders need to listen to those on staff, but when a direction is set, they must determine to follow.

A head football coach may decide on a passing offense. Assistant coaches who believe a running game would be best, and who cannot live with a passing game, should look for employment on a team more suitable to their disposition.
Otherwise, dissention foments in the ranks. Otherwise, there is a constant source of conflict. And Jesus taught, “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall” (Luke 11:17 NIV).

The leader sets the agenda, and, when the course is set, the team is supposed to fall in behind him, to help him reach the chosen objectives.
The United Nations is obviously an incompetent, corrupt mess. Therefore those opposing Bolton’s nomination are?it seems?opposed to the idea of cleaning it up. The confirmation process should be focused on Bolton’s vision for the U.N., rather than whether he attempted to get rid of resisting subordinates.

Regardless of the outcome, Bolton demonstrated effective leadership by building a team in agreement with policy, rather than allowing it to run wild.
