Did you know that if all gringos just drove like Hispanics, Los Angeles' freeway congestion would be relieved?

That's right! It's as simple as that! Who knew?

As a matter of fact, according to a new study by the University of California at Los Angeles based on year 2000 Census figures, new Hispanic "immigrants" are good guys when it comes to L.A.'s traffic congestion and air pollution.

The study says Hispanics are much more likely than whites to carpool or use public transportation. The results show that Hispanic immigrants are five times more likely to carpool than non-Hispanic whites and seven times more likely to use public transportation.
Conclusion? More bus use and more carpools equal less congestion.

You could also conclude we'd better watch out if all those folks get their own cars.
Of course, the study only looked at Hispanics and whites – no blacks, no Asians – and they didn't look at reasons for such commuting habits.

Do you think those factors might have changed the results?
One of their conclusions for the differences is that income seems to be a major factor.

Duh. For this we need a university study? People with more income tend to want the convenience and privacy of wheels.
They also didn't look at the immigration status of all those Hispanic commuters. Isn't that an important factor? Perhaps if the illegals weren't here, the congestion might also be relieved.

Oh, I'm sorry, it's not politic to raise issues like that.
Professor David Hayes-Bautista, director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, which conducted the study, says that new Hispanics burden the system less than people who moved to California in the '40s and '50s.

"They're not burdening the system the way the post-World War II, largely Midwestern in-migrants burdened the system."
"In-migrants"? And all along, I thought we just moved from New York to California. Silly me!

Apparently those Midwestern whites who headed to the golden state in the '40s and '50s for better opportunities, drove to work alone and cluttered up the roads.
Bad Midwesteners. Bad white guys.
Those people were lucky to have cars. The freeway system that exists today was only a dream in the '40s and early '50s. There was no transportation system and there was no other way to get to work – or anywhere else, for that matter. How did they get to California in the first place?
Forget that there was a rail system which was systematically demolished – a similar travesty took place in the San Francisco Bay area. It was accomplished with the collusion of government, the oil companies, the tire companies and buses. The push was for rolling transportation and that's what we got. Of course, it didn't hurt that those wheels needed roads and construction also benefited.
In the old west, a man had his horse or his wagon. In the new west, a man has his car or truck. Privacy, independence, mobility and freedom.
Government continues to poke into our lives and freedoms. They forced us into vehicles, we pay for miles of roads, and now they want to get us out of our cars. The big push is on – and not just in California – to get people out of their cars and they do it both in your face and insidiously.
There's the push to carpool, which includes removing general-use freeway lanes and converting them to car-pools; there's the push to force commuters into using electronic toll-paying, which also allows the tracking of our vehicles.
Lest you think I'm paranoid, the issue is being floated in California and elsewhere to tax drivers on the total number of miles driven rather than by gasoline taxes. That technology opens the door to tracking our mileage.
It's a case of unanticipated consequences. With better mileage cars, they say they aren't collecting enough revenue. But government forced carmakers to produce the lower mileage cars in the first place.
But the real reason for the study has nothing to do with relieveing freeway congestion in Los Angeles. It has to do with the professor's analysis of the results. He says there was an expectation that an increase in Hispanic population would increase traffic congestion and the study proves otherwise.
It has to do with providing activists with more ammunition to continue their support for the huge influx of immigrants – read that as: "illegal aliens."
It's another way to put a good face on illegals in this country.
You have to learn to read between the lines and see the intent of such reports. It's a whitewash of illegal aliens and provides propaganda for those overloaded with liberal guilt because of their pale skin color and economic success.
