While not specifically denying that President Bush was considering possible replacement nominees should Harriet Miers be rejected by the U.S. Senate, presidential press secretary Scott McClellan said at today's White House press briefing that his boss is confident she will be confirmed.

"We're confident that Harriet Miers will be confirmed to our nation's highest court," McClellan told WND after a question about possible replacement nominees.

"No one that knows her would make any such suggestion [that she may be rejected] because they know that she is uniquely well-qualified to serve on the nation's highest court. If you look at her record and experience and compare that to previous justices who have been confirmed, I would submit to you that her qualifications and experience exceed – either the same as, or exceed many of those."

Many national commentators have questioned the choice of Miers, who now serves as White House counsel and has never been a judge. Some have called for her to unilaterally withdraw her name from consideration or for the president to replace her as his nominee. Serious questions about her philosophy, qualifications and intellect have been raised by senators and others since Bush named her as his choice Oct. 3.
