of all time

By WND Staff

John Bunyan

He was arguably one of the most influential writers in world history.

There is no argument he’s the best-selling human author of all time.

His name was John Bunyan. He was a 17th century tinker – a mender of pots and pans – and wrote his greatest works while imprisoned for his Christian beliefs.

His “Pilgrim’s Progress ” is second only to the Bible in the number of copies it has sold worldwide. It has even been called “the second best book in all the world.”

And now, a new collector’s edition – an heirloom quality reproduction – is selling even more this Christmas season.

“This is an exquisite reproduction of this 125-year-old historical compilation manuscript in its original 860-page entirety,” said WND’s Joseph Farah. “I took one look at this book – and it took my breath away.”

This hardcover edition originally was published in 1876. More than 125 years later, it has been meticulously re-created using modern technology, but keeping the original look and feel by painstakingly scanning in high-resolution every page of this 860-page tome ? historic stains and all!

“The Pilgrim’s Progress” appears in the original large print inside this new edition, creating an easier reading experience for all ages.

The book includes:

  • “The Pilgrim’s Progress”: Written during a brief re-imprisonment in 1675 at the age of 50, John Bunyan’s dream, written from a prison cell, has become the most famous allegory in English literature. Written almost 350 years ago, this book has been read in prim parlors, in sophisticated drawing rooms, in royal households, in religion classes, in schoolrooms, in family worship — and still it is read by all those who, too, would be a pilgrim.
  • “The Holy War”: John Bunyan wrote this book sometime during the first six years of his incarceration in Bedford Prison. It was first published six years before Bunyan’s death.
  • “Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners”: A spiritual autobiography, John Bunyan wrote this book at the age of 38 while still in Bedford Prison. It was first published in 1666, the year of the Fire of London. “In a faithful account of the life of John Bunyan, or a brief relation of the exceeding mercy of God in Christ to him; namely, in taking him out of the dunghill, and converting him to the faith of His blessed Son, Jesus Christ. Here is also particularly showed, what sight of, and what trouble he had for sin; and also what various temptations he met with; and how God hath carried him through them. Corrected and much enlarged by the author, for the benefit of the tempted and dejected Christian.”
  • “The Imprisonment and Release of John Bunyan”: Published in conjunction with a later version of “Grace Abounding.” Unpublished until 1765, 77 years after John Bunyan died.
  • “Bunyan’s Dying Sayings”: A collection of aphorisms gathered and classified under headings. They are his thoughts, whether uttered in his last illness, or expressed earlier in life.
  • “Christian Behaviour”: Written in 1663 at the age of 46, while imprisoned in Bedford Prison, this was John Bunyan’s third book during his first incarceration. Being the fruits of true Christianity: Teaching husbands, wives, parents, children, masters, servants, etc., how to walk so as to please God.
  • “The Barren Fig Tree”: Written in 1688 at age 60 about the doom and downfall of the fruitless professor. Showing, that the day of grace may be past with him long before his life is ended. The signs also by which such miserable mortals may be known.
  • “Bunyan’s Last Sermon”: John Bunyan died within two months of completing his 60th year, on Aug. 31, 1688. This sermon showed a resemblance between a natural and a spiritual birth; and how every man and woman may try themselves, and know whether they are born again or not. It was preached only two days before his fatal illness, and 12 days before his death.
  • “The Water of Life”: A discourse showing the richness and glory of the grace of the Gospel, as set forth in the Scripture by this term, ‘The Water of Life.’ Published the year John Bunyan died.

It also includes a dozen narrative etchings.

“This is a book that should be in every home,” said Farah. “This is a work that needs to be read today – more than ever.”
