"There's nothing new under the sun" Solomon wrote 3,000 years ago. Last week, conservatives across America were challenging the Preacher's words. Senate imbecility in handling the illegal-immigration crisis reached unprecedented, never-before-seen lows.

Unprecedented, perhaps, in the annals of U.S. history, but not in those of world history. Today's "senators" were the "princes" of ancient Egypt 4,000 years ago. God spoke of these "princes" from the ancient cities of Zoan and Noph, in Isaiah 19:11-14, and here's what He had to say (with some paraphrasing added in brackets):

Surely the princes of Zoan are fools, the counsel of the wise counselors of Pharaoh is become brutish [i.e., you're dumb as animals]: How say ye unto Pharaoh, "I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?" [Your self-acclaimed wisdom is a joke.]

Where are they? Where are thy wise men? And let them tell thee now, and let them know what the Lord of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt. [You're not in control – God is.]
The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even they that are the stay of the tribes thereof. [Concerning reality, you're clueless.]

The Lord hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit. [Your policies that you think are so clever are, in actuality, destroying yourself and the land.]

God credited Himself for toppling the great empire of ancient Egypt. Turning the wisdom of its policymakers into foolishness was His chief means in so doing. "The princes becoming fools" equates to overwhelming, supernatural, self-destructive stupidity in determining national policy. Sound familiar?
I was intrigued this past week by the befuddlement and exasperation I heard in conservative pundits across the fruited plain. I listened as they groped to find an explanation for the pathological actions of our lawmakers. I'm among those who see senatorial and presidential appeasement of illegal immigration as akin to pouring poison down America's throat. It'll kill America, at least America as we know it.
All week long, I heard the outbursts of protest: "Inexplicable." "I can't understand why," "It makes no sense," "You can't make this stuff up," and so on. When God was judging Egypt on account of sin, He said He would make her national counselors fools, their reasonings like the stumbling of a vomiting drunk, and their own stupid policies the cause of their downfall. Excuse me if this is too simplistic an explanation of the inexplicable, but it seems Capitol Hill is the new Zoan of the world, and our Senate body its new princes.
If one views last week's Hill shenanigans through the lens of Scripture, all makes perfect sense. A rebellious nation that has come under the judgment of God can expect their leaders to become supernaturally stupid. One imploding caller on a D.C. talk-show last week cast this Senate complaint: "What I don't understand is, why do they [the senators] hate Americans?" The question is not as extreme as it sounds. Psalm 106:40-41 states:
Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against His people, insomuch that He abhorred His own inheritance. And He gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them [emphasis added].
When a nation watches its own rulers inexplicably destroying their country, despising the will of the people who put them into power, penalizing the upright, rewarding the unlawful, and failing to take rational action to secure and preserve their society, it's time to check with God's Word to find out what's going on.
Simply put, the insanity of the U.S. Supreme Court's "anti-God" rulings of the '60s continues to spread irrationality through the whole body politic. Make no mistake: In the last 40 years, great progress has been made in banishing Jesus Christ's name and influence from American culture and politics. For that, there's a tremendous price to be paid – the judgment of God.
Only national repentance from sin and a turning to Christ can heal the deadly spread of insanity that's destroying our country. This past week, our national rejection of Christ was seen taking its toll on our Senate. Welcome to Zoan.
