The fate of kidnapped Israeli soldiers, as well as Iran and Syria’s role in the rapidly expanding violence in the Mideast, were discussed in an extensive conversation today between Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and Lebanese Prime Minister Faud Sinora, the Galil Report has learned.
The two leaders also discussed the current state of emergency in Lebanon, following yesterday’s Hezbollah raid during which two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped. Israeli retaliation today has included the bombing of important Lebanese targets and the imposition of an air and sea blockade.
Hezbollah has been hitting northern Israeli cities with short-range rockets and there is a fear of an Israeli ground invasion if the Lebanese militia fires longer-range missiles into the Jewish state.
Egypt has been mediating the past two weeks between Hamas and Israel over the fate of abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was kidnapped during a Hamas raid of a major Israeli military station that prompted an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza.
Gheit today expressed his country’s willingness to lead mediation efforts between Hezbollah, Lebanon and the Israeli government over the flair-up some politicians here are calling a war.
Egyptian and Lebanese sources briefed the Galil Report on the Gheit-Sinora conversation, including information on the two Israeli soldiers kidnapped yesterday by Hezbollah, efforts to rescue them, and the role of Iranian advisers in the escalating conflict.
