As a young man, I learned a simple way to achieve success. Find someone who is successful and copy what he did to bring about success. I have watched, through the years, this principle at work. As such, I would encourage our president and Congress to follow the actions of Israel in fighting the Hezbollah terrorists.

In just a six short weeks, Israel has done a great job, a job that will end with the complete elimination of Hezbollah's ability to launch attacks on Israel. I have it on good authority that Israel will not stop until they secure their nation and succeed in their endeavors to accomplish what Lebanon either refused to do or was unable to do – despite the passage of a cease-fire resolution yesterday at the U.N. Security Council.

A previous U.N. Resolution, 1559, was clear. It demanded the dismantling of Hezbollah, and soon that resolution will be fulfilled. The only question we should ask is how could a small nation like Israel be so successful in such a short period of time when the finest fighting men and women in the history of the world are still struggling in Iraq? The answer is so simple it is frightening.

First, when Israel chose to destroy Hezbollah, the only acceptable outcome would be complete and total victory. The Israelis didn't care what the media or the United Nations said. They knew in advance the media would demonize Israel for destroying the fine folks like Nassrallah and Company that do such a great job with social services to the poor in Lebanon. They knew the anti-Semite Kofi Annan would be accusing them of all types of nefarious actions without any evidence to back it up. They prepared to be hated by the world for doing a very nasty job. Israel would attack and destroy terrorists and their assets, regardless if they were hidden in the back bedroom of a terrorist's mother-in-law's apartment or in an open field of battle.
Israel has come to grips with the need for a "disproportionate" use of force to defend itself. Six million Jews living amongst 600 million enemies – enemies that want you dead. Force is the only way to keep it fair. Oh and by the way, if equal amounts on each side die, who is the winner? In war, one side has to surrender or one side totally eliminates the other. Don't hold your breath on seeing Hezbollah surrender. They already had the chance. They used the time to prepare for war. Disproportionate use of force is not a new phenomenon. I think we used it after Pearl Harbor and our allies used it on the Nazis. Ugly? Yes. Effective? Apparently. We get along real well with Japan and Germany today.
Second, the Israelis decided to support their soldiers and not attack them. They wouldn't think to arrest their soldiers and throw them in the brig for assault or murder. If Israel has a problem with conduct they will deal with it, but after success is certain, not during the process. They understand to undermine the troops is to undermine morale and the national support necessary for success. Israel provides a "we have your back" support system to each soldier so they can focus on the bad guys without the worry of indictment. Israel has no problem with replacing ineffective leaders if progress is not going according to plan. They are willing to readjust. And if they change command, they thank the leaving leader instead of shredding him in the press. But notice they have never talked about withdrawal, nor have they considered failure. Adjustments yes. Failure no.

Third, Israel moved forward with the mission without Israel's leaders attacking the troops, leadership or the prime minister. Israel didn't have ex-prime ministers screaming how Ehud Olmert betrayed his nation. How he "played on their fears," like Al Gore. They didn't have ex-war heroes like Ehud Barak (former PM and war hero) accusing soldiers of "cold blooded murder," like John Murtha. There were no Israeli Knesset members suggesting that Israeli soldiers were "terrorizing women and children," like John Kerry. Israel would have no part in such talk. They were fighting a war. How could that be? They are a democracy just like us. Where was the free speech? The voices like Cindy Sheehan accusing the prime minister of killing her son? Israelis, unlike Americans, understands the threat to their existence and realizes the enemy wants them dead. Therefore, there is no way in the world they would criticize the leaders fighting for their future.
So if the president and those in Congress truly want victory in Iraq it would serve the country well for them to follow the lead of Israel. It is time to step up the pressure in Iraq, as Israel is doing in Lebanon, until the terrorists are purged from the streets. Disproportionate force is exactly what we need on the streets of Baghdad. Overwhelming force will change the war overnight. If a safe and stable Iraq is the goal, and in our best long-term interest, let's get it done. It is very simple if you allow our troops and the commanders to operate with the support and single-mindedness of Israel. Give the order, Mr. Bush. The troops can "git 'er dun."

Don't think peace is better than war. A premature peace only allows the enemy to regroup and then stage a larger attack in the future. If Hezbollah is given a cease-fire, it will allow Iran to send in more arms, more rockets and maybe worse. A cease-fire will only serve to encourage the likes of Ahmadinejad in Iran. If the West pressures Israel to stop it's dismantling of Hezbollah, it will reaffirm Osama bin Laden's belief that the West is a weak paper tiger that will fold if he and his animals spill enough blood. Osama cares not if that blood comes from innocent or enemy veins. He is a terrorist. Terrorists feed off of chaos. Israel will not accept a cease-fire that allows the enemy to get stronger. Israel has made a decision that Hezbollah and Israel cannot exist in the same world. Today, Israelis are being attacked with rockets that were created and stockpiled during the last "peace." They have decided terrorist attacks will no longer be tolerated. We should apply the same in Iraq.
Israel will be successful in defeating the evil that masquerades as Hezbollah. The nation is in one accord and no attention is given to the naysayers. Too much is at stake. If leaders, after given proper support, are ineffective, they are replaced. Politicians will save their criticism until the troops are out of harm's way. The media in Israel will support, not belittle, the troops. Soldiers that may have broken the rules will be punished after the war. The only goal that matters is success.
If we fail in Iraq, assure yourself, Iran will rapidly fill the vacuum of power. It will move even quicker to acquire nuclear weapons and then the world will have a problem that no talking, no diplomacy, no cease-fire in the world will stop. It is time to say no to terrorism. If not, now when? If not this way, than how? Israel has made its choice. Have we?
