Presidential press secretary Tony Snow today downplayed his confrontation with NBC's David Gregory yesterday during which the spokesman accused the reporter of being rude and the correspondent ordered Snow: "Don't point your finger at me."

Gregory had asked Snow about Presiden Bush politicizing national security in the runup to November's elections.

After a long comment about the issue by Gregory, Snow picked up the verbal volley:

SNOW: I think you've admirably expressed the Democratic point of view, but I don't think –
GREGORY: Actually, Tony, I don't think that's fair, if you look at the facts. If you look at the facts.

SNOW: Well, I do, because – no, because, for instance –
GREGORY: No, no, no. No, I don't think you should be able to just wipe that, kind of dismiss the question –

SNOW: Well, let me –
GREGORY: It's not a Democratic argument, Tony.
SNOW: Let me answer the question, David.
GREGORY: But hold on, let's not let you get away with saying that's a Democratic argument.
SNOW: OK, let me – let's not let you get away with being rude. Let me just answer the question, and you can come back at me.
GREGORY: Excuse me. Don't point your finger at me. I'm not being rude.
SNOW: Yes, you are.
In an interview today, WND asked Snow: "Does the president expect you to put up with such abuse [by Gregory] because it comes from one of the old networks?"
Responded Snow: "I'm not picking fights with David. I think what we ended up getting was a real question and a real answer and a place to provide it."
