Do you need some motivation to get you to the polls today?
I do.
And here's mine.
As you know, I've been extremely disappointed by the Republicans who have been in control of Congress and the presidency since 2001.
They waited far too long to act on border security. They increased spending beyond imagination. Far too often, they talked and acted like Democrats.
I've been a strong advocate of not voting for the lesser to two evils as a means of stimulating more competition in the political marketplace.
But I'd like to present the other side of that story today, as we consider the very real prospect of a Democratic victory in the midterm elections taking place as you read this.
There is another way to foster political competition. That is to destroy the Democratic Party – or to change it fundamentally from a socialist, anti-U.S., appeasement party to one that is more in tune with mainstream American values.
Suppose the Democrats took a real beating today at the polls?
It could happen.
John Kerry made that prospect possible, in my opinion, the other day when he insulted our troops in Iraq. It was a gaffe of monumental proportions by a politician who is known for putting his foot in his mouth.
Let me remind you that John Kerry is not just a senator from Massachusetts. As the most recent nominee for the party's presidential candidate, he is also the head of the Democratic Party.
We could stay home and punish the Republicans. Or, we could go vote to really punish the Democrats – not just punish them, but destroy them as a viable party.
Let's face it – just a few days ago, Rep. Nancy Pelosi was measuring the drapes in the speaker's office. The Democrats have tasted victory already – prematurely. What would happen if we denied it?
I think it would be a political earthquake.
I think the Democrats would have to re-evaluate everything.
I think they would have to look seriously at their message, at their candidates, at their philosophy, at the way they have turned their party into a bastion of extremists.
If ever there was an opportunity to deal the Democratic Party a deathblow from which they might not be able to recover, this could be it.
Their expectations were so high.
Even a status quo vote would be shocking to the Democrats.
Oh, sure, they would no doubt play the vote-fraud card. That will happen in all likelihood even if they win by a small margin.
But I, for one, would love to see what would happen – just as a sociological and political experiment – if the Democrats got trounced today.
I know this may sound like a different message than I have given you before. The truth is – it is.
But today, as our brave troops continue the fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can't help but think of the disaster that awaits them, us, the Iraqi people and all freedom-loving people around the world if the Democrats take the House and Senate.
They've told us what they're going to do. They're going to cut and run, raise the white flag of surrender to the terrorists, sue for peace, appease the enemy. That's what they do. They did it in Vietnam and it took us 20 years to recover. We may never recover from another blow like that.
So that's what's going through my mind today in these final moments of the campaign. No, I'm not telling you to vote for just any old Republican, but I am suggesting strongly you vote against every single Democrat.
