Al Gore's tax on thin air

It always seems odd to me that those who worship at Darwin's grave are the first to be upset by change and often its loudest opponents. Isn't evolution all about change? Isn't change how everyone and everything evolves for the better? Isn't change how you and I got here in the first place? That's what the "vast majority of scientists" and all evolutionists tell us. Viewed through the words of the self-esteem movement, change is simply nature's way of getting better and better every day.

But now the "change is good" crowd seems to be telling a different story. Change is bad! Change is evil! Change will be catastrophic! Change will be the death of us all! We must stop the world's temperature from changing! And they've been preaching to the media choir, which has now joined together in a crescendo of ignorant voices.

The fact of the matter is the world got on fabulously well without us for – in the words of Carl Sagan – "billions and billions" of years. When, precisely, during those billions of years was humanity put in charge of regulating the world's temperature?

Better yet – what, exactly, is the world's temperature? Depending on where you live, the temperature in your part of the world is likely to be quite different from where I live. Where in the world do we stick the thermometer to find out just exactly what the world's temperature is? And how good were our measurements of the world's temperature hundreds or thousands of years ago? You know – the figures that show the earth is half-a-degree warmer today than it was back then?

Aside from the maniacal claims that humanity somehow controls the earth's temperature – that, in fact, we could do anything about it if we wanted to – let's examine the major premise for these dire warnings.

Take a deep breath – and exhale. There, we've all contributed to global warming. It's carbon dioxide that's the problem. According to Encarta, carbon dioxide makes up about three one-hundreths of 1 percent of the earth's atmosphere. It's an entirely natural gas. And the proportion of that miniscule percentage attributed to humanity is itself tiny.

So, is our tiny portion of that 0.03 percent of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere really what's causing the earth to change temperature? Al Gore seems to think so. He says he has the ice crystals to prove it. Unfortunately, the crystals melted before he could measure the proportion of carbon dioxide as a part of the atmosphere trapped in the ice crystals.

Fortunately, while Al was soaking in his heated swimming pool, other scientists did measure the bit of trapped atmosphere in amongst the ice crystals. What they found was that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere trails temperature change by about 400 years. So much for carbon dioxide causing global warming, huh? Carbon dioxide is the last to get the word about temperature change.

There is, however, one natural phenomenon that marches in lockstep with the earth's temperature. Pick your measurement: ice crystals, tree rings or tea leaves. When the sun hiccups, the earth gets warmer. Sunspot activity is a perfect match. You can learn all the details – and a lot more – from "The Great Global Warming Swindle." The inconvenient truth about global warming is this: It's the greatest swindle by tax-hungry governments in the world's history. The carbon dioxide scare is a creation of government. It is underpinned by government-paid "scientists" who know they would never get another penny of grant money during their lifetime if they admitted their fraud. It is a political effort by many of the world's governments to implement a tax on thin air (carbon tax), which – like every tax the world has ever seen – is passed on to the last man or woman standing in the supermarket checkout line. That, dear reader, would be you and me.
