Tom Tancredo’s campaign ad depicts a terrorist entering an American mall with an explosive backpack |
The video content site YouTube has flagged a new campaign ad by Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo, warning of its content and requiring viewers to verify they are 18 or older.
The 30-second spot airing on Iowa cable stations this week links the country’s illegal immigration problem to terrorism, depicting an attack on an American mall.
“There are consequences to open borders beyond the 20 million aliens who have come to take our jobs,” the narrator says. “Islamic terrorists now freely roam U.S. soil. Jihadists, who froth with hate, here to do what they have in London, Spain, and Russia.”
The ad has a hooded man walking into a crowded mall with a backpack. As a clock ticks in the background, the man leaves the backpack at a bench.
The narrator concludes: “The price we pay for spineless politicians who refuse to defend our borders against those who come to kill. [Explosion] Tancredo … before it’s too late.”
YouTube is trying to make sure young viewers don’t have access to the ad.
“This video or group may contain content that is inappropriate for some users, as flagged by YouTube’s user community,” says its warning. “To view this video or group, please verify you are 18 or older by logging in or signing up.”

Tancredo’s campaign manager Bay Buchanan, the sister of political analyst Pat Buchanan, dismissed critics who contend the ad plays the “fear card.”
“There’s nothing over the top about this,” she told CNN. “It’s quite accurate.”
Buchanan pointed to a recent FBI memo alerting law enforcement authorities to a tip that al-Qaida terrorists could be planning attacks on shopping malls in Los Angeles and Chicago during the upcoming holiday season.
Buchanan told CNN the complaint that Tancredo is trying to instill fear is a “common response of individuals who don’t like your message.”
“But the key is this: Is there a concern that this could happen to us at anytime? It has to be the case, the FBI just confirmed it,” she said.
“Washington doesn’t have the guts, or the courage, or the will to do their job which is to secure their nation and that is why we face this threat,” Buchanan told the network. “Unless we speak about it, we can’t expect the American people to put the proper pressure on Washington to do what they were elected to do.”
Tancredo raised eyebrows in August when he said bombing holy Muslim sites would serve as a “deterrent” to prevent a terrorist attack on the U.S.
