Illegal immigration is still a campaign issue, but will the next president and the next Congress really act to stop the invasion?

Obviously not if the Democrats sweep into control of the presidency and maintain control of the House and Senate.
And, given the track records of the leading Republican presidential candidates, they may not do much better.

It is imperative that Americans keep up the pressure on the Washington establishment, which would love nothing more than for this issue to just go away.
But a new study in Great Britain shows the impact waves of immigration by foreigners – legal or illegal – can diminish the number of jobs available for home-grown citizens.

Since 2004, some 700,000 Eastern Europeans registered to work in the United Kingdom.
When this process began, British officials made the same argument President Bush and others who dismissed the impact of uncontrolled immigration in America made – that these new arrivals would just do the jobs spoiled, comfortable citizens would not do.
That was always a specious argument – and those making it should have known better.
But now, what common sense should have told anyone, is now a matter of fact.

I've been saying for years that young Americans just don't have the opportunities we once had in this country for a first job – due to a combination of illegal immigration and government rules and regulations that discourage the hiring of kids.

And this is just one of dozens of reasons to oppose illegal immigration.
Here are some others we should not forget:
- crime
- traffic
- driving safety
- national security
- drugs
- national sovereignty
- amnesty doesn't work
- assimilation of vast numbers of immigrants takes too long
- it attacks what holds us together – common language and culture
- it creates resentment among the new underclass
- it is an immoral infringement on the right of all citizens who are forced to accept national IDs, cameras and other intrusive forms of surveillance in a once-free society
- it victimizes foreigners who play by the rules
- it is an affront to the rule of law
- it is a drain on America's health care system
- it drives up taxes
- diseases
- it lowers wages for American workers in the lower rung of the economic ladder
- it takes the lives of many migrants
- when husbands and fathers emigrate for work, it splits families apart

One thing America cannot and must not accept in 2008 – more talk and no action on illegal immigration and border security.
