Punk band pokes fun with 'Christian' suicide bomber

A punk band has released a music video featuring a "Christian" teenage suicide bomber and criticizing believers and homeschoolers for imposing their values on the nation.

Kill the Hippies, a rock group from Kent, Ohio, made a video called "Teenage Suicide Bomber" that features a mentally disturbed teenager who straps a bomb to his chest and slaughters children on a public school bus, dancers in a nightclub and a crowd of abortion protesters – all in the name of Christianity.

WND asked lead vocalist Matt Trahan why the band decided to portray the suicide bomber as a Christian.

"The reason I used Christians, really, is because everyone around me that I know pretty much comes from a Christian background," he said. "When I look at Muslims, I see pretty much a minority in this country, and I don't really like picking on the little guy."

Trahan said the video is a satire about people who want the U.S. to be a theocracy.

"If we're talking about ideas of theocracy, I think that's something that we all don't really want in this country," he said. "We don't want to be told what to do on the basis of religion."

In the video, a puppet representing a Christian boy is given a brown paper lunch sack by his mother. She puts a bomb into the package, and the boy approaches a school bus with "secular public school" painted on the outside. He detonates the bomb and kills the children and himself in the fiery explosion. Trahan said the blast is a social statement about critics of public schools.

"You're going to find, on the left and the right, the popularity of homeschooling," Trahan said. "I really think public schools are a good thing in this country, and it's under attack."

The music video also features a puppet preacher who teaches snake handling as a practice of Christianity. Trahan said the snakes were shown as a way to "poke fun of the religion."

"Obviously it is a stereotype," he said. "We're looking at it as if fundamentalists became terrorists tomorrow, and we're looking at the idea of suicide bombing as an act of faith. In our own country, we do have different sects of people who will handle venomous snakes, and if you get bitten by the snake, it shows your lack of faith, which is pretty extreme. Right there, there's a negation of life."

Trahan referenced shootings and bombings at abortion clinics in the 1990s as examples of Christian violence.

"There were doctors who worked at clinics who were shot to death by people who were in fringe groups that identified themselves as Christian – very far off Christians I'd imagine – but that's what I remember from back then," he said.

While Trahan said the film is a parody, he insisted there is some truth to the idea that Christians can be terrorists.

"I don't think that Christians are firebombing anything right now," he said. "But it wasn't that long ago in the '90s that we did have domestic terrorism in our country."

Trahan said the social message of the video is that Americans should not be bullied by Christians who seek to convert the U.S. to a theocratic form of government.

"I feel that what's good about this country is under siege from elements of the right wing in this country that are pushing an agenda based on one religion," he said.
